I know what it’s like to be in pain. I know how frustrating it can feel when you are physically limited from participating in your favorite hobbies or spending quality time with friends and family. It’s not fun.
My roommate in college got us into a car accident, resulting in me having a bad concussion, TMJ, migraines, vertigo, and numerous musculoskeletal injuries. My professors advised me to quit the program; they said I was too injured to ever work as a physical therapist.
Getting through school was nothing short of a miracle. But guess how I did it? Yep! Physical therapy! I underwent physical therapy for my neck, back, shoulder, and brain. I did my home exercise program for 1-4 hours per day, 5-6 days per week, for almost two years.
After finally earning my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Florida International University, I began my career at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. Throughout the years, I expanded my skillset working in intensive care, trauma, oncology, neurology, spine and orthopedic surgical patients, in-patient rehab, and outpatient physical therapy clinics. Working in several hospitals over my career, I noticed a startling trend: Patients are frequently sent home from the hospital without knowing the root cause of their illness. Instead, they leave feeling frustrated by the myriad of prescription drugs given as a band-aid to cover up their symptoms. But what if this could all be prevented?
During my rehab, one physician told me it would take up to 7 years for the inflammation to go down after that car accident. I was stunned. Then I shifted to an anti-inflammatory diet. I made a full recovery within five years. Always believing that nutrition was paramount to good health, becoming a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner® led to me creating an online health coaching program for my clients. Becoming a Board-Certified Diplomat with the American Board of Clinical Nutrition was the icing on the [gluten-free] cake!
I co-founded HealWell Regenerative Institute to provide real pain relief for people. I want patients to continue to come back to HealWell because it is a comforting experience. I want them to walk out of the clinic feeling better than they ever expected to feel from PT. While the patient receives hands-on care from the therapist, they will experience the latest in technology and get some coaching on how to use exercise and food as medicine. I want to treat people better than I was treated in physical therapy. I want to create a place where people can heal well.
